The Federal Government commissioned 30.58 kilometres of road works on the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway, the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation reported on October 22. The ceremony took place in Kano the previous day, with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf performing the commissioning on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, according to the release.

The Works Ministry described the section as part of a wider effort to complete inherited infrastructure projects and strengthen national connectivity. It said the road is intended to facilitate movement of people, agricultural produce and other goods. Those are the government’s stated objectives; the announcement does not supply observed traffic counts, freight volumes or evidence of reduced journey times after opening.

The official release gives the commissioned length as 30.58 kilometres but does not identify precise chainage endpoints, lane configuration or the number of structures included in the opened section. It also omits the contract value, cumulative spending, overall project completion percentage and remaining sections. Readers therefore cannot infer from this announcement how much of the entire expressway is now usable or what proportion of the project has been completed.

The ceremony was held in Kano State and was attended by federal and state officials. The ministry framed the section as strategic infrastructure for regional commerce and mobility. The publication is a government account of commissioning; it does not provide a separate engineering completion certificate or a traffic-management plan.

The route links Abuja with Kaduna, Zaria and Kano, cities and commercial centres across north-central and north-western Nigeria. Better road continuity could support passenger travel and goods movement, but the scale of any benefit depends on remaining construction, maintenance, safety conditions and access roads. The ministry did not quantify expected savings for farmers, businesses or travellers.

The announcement records a construction milestone rather than a new transport policy or a fully completed Abuja-Kano route. It says the section was commissioned; it does not establish that all works across the corridor are complete. The distinction matters for readers tracking whether a continuous road journey has become available and whether freight or passenger outcomes have changed.

Works Minister David Umahi said the administration prioritized the outstanding sections after earlier construction delays and rising costs. The former contract had been terminated, and President Bola Tinubu directed the ministry to focus on completing the route to standards of quality, safety and durability, according to the official account. The release also says the president directed an extension of the Kano section to Malam Aminu Kano International Airport; it does not give a completion date for that extension.

Umahi said Lot 1, covering 118 kilometres at an estimated cost of ₦252 billion, had been completed. This is a separate project figure from the 30.58 kilometres commissioned at the ceremony. The ministry also cited continuously reinforced concrete pavement on substantial parts of the road, saying the technology was chosen to improve durability and reduce maintenance needs. It did not provide a breakdown of contract costs or compare pavement performance against alternatives.

Highways Director David Yiltong said the commissioned work includes asphalt pavement at the Kano end and additional work along the Karfi and Kunkumi axis. Engineer’s Representative Chukwuma Kalu Igwe described the work scope as pavement construction and rehabilitation, asphalt surfacing, drainage, road-structure improvements, streetlights, CCTV cameras and related infrastructure. The release does not list quantities or condition ratings for each component.

Officials said the road works improved access to communities and commercial centres along the corridor and that lighting improved nighttime visibility. Kano State separately commissioned rehabilitation of Audu Bako Way and dualisation of Nassarawa Hospital Roads during the event. Those are state urban-road projects, distinct from the federal expressway work. The ministry did not give their lengths or costs in the release.
