Sri Lanka starts 21-km aviation-fuel pipeline and new storage tanks

Sri Lanka began a 21-kilometre underground Jet A-1 pipeline from Muthurajawela to Bandaranaike International Airport and five tanks with 92,000 cubic metres of combined capacity. A separate CPSTL project will add three tanks and 40,000 cubic metres at Muthurajawela.

According to the government portal, the main project launched on 2 October includes two tanks of 30,000 cubic metres each, two of 15,000 cubic metres each and one of 2,000 cubic metres, giving total capacity of 92,000 cubic metres. The 10-inch underground pipeline linking the Muthurajawela tank site to the airport in Katunayake is 21 kilometres long and is scheduled for completion in 30 months.

CPSTL is separately building three tanks at the same terminal: two of 15,000 cubic metres and one of 10,000 cubic metres, adding 40,000 cubic metres of storage. Its contract period is 18 months, with completion targeted for April 2028. The announcement describes two distinct construction packages, so their capacities should not be confused.
