Portugal’s Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said in a provisional assessment published October 18 that mainland Portugal had recorded nine heatwaves in 2026. The assessment covering February through October counted 98 heatwave days so far this year, above previous totals of 97 days in 2009 and 91 in 2017.
IPMA described the June 29–July 11 episode as one of the most notable heatwaves since 1981. The source provisionally lists the ninth episode in the northeast as October 10–16. Its text gives October 16 as an expected end, which is not treated here as a confirmed completion date.
