Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Pakistan Peoples Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari inaugurated the Phase III expansion of the Thar Block-II coal mine in Tharparkar on 5 October. Shah said the project would lift annual production capacity from 7.6 million to 11.2 million tonnes.

He said the expansion was being completed through full self-financing. According to his remarks, it would enable the 660-megawatt Lucky Electric plant to use Thar coal and raise total electricity generation from Thar coal to 1,980 megawatts. These are project and government-reported capacity figures; the report does not say the expanded mine has already reached its new output.
