U.S. coal production fell 2.2% year over year in the second quarter

EIA’s October 1 report put U.S. coal production at 125.4 million short tons in the second quarter of 2026; the data are preliminary.

Production was 4.9% lower than the previous quarter and 2.2% below the same quarter of 2025. Consumption, mostly attributable to electric power, was 88.8 million short tons, down 10.2% year over year.

Coal exports reached 26.8 million short tons, up 13.3% from the first quarter, while stocks rose to 145.5 million short tons. EIA marks 2025 and 2026 data as preliminary; short tons are retained as reported.
