Coal share of EU electricity generation falls to 9.2%

The combined hard coal and brown coal share reached a new low in 2025.

Hard coal accounted for 3.7% of EU gross electricity production in 2025 and brown coal for 5.5%, Eurostat reported. Their combined 9.2% share was the lowest in the series.

The total coal share had first fallen below 10% in 2024. This indicator covers electricity generation, rather than coal’s share of all energy consumption including industry or its share of energy imports.
