Launched at the Mauritius Maritime Training Academy by the fisheries ministry, the programme aims to build professional skills among people working on fishing vessels under 24 metres. The Government Information Service says the course lasts 12 weeks and comprises six modules.

Twenty-five selected participants already active in fishing will take the course, sit written and oral examinations, and receive certificates if successful. The ministry links the programme to safety at sea and responsible fishing; the release gives no outcome or employment target.
