UNICEF reports school support alongside persistent education gaps in Mali

UNICEF said 151,189 children received school kits and learning materials during the previous year, while 2,444 schools remained non-functional nationwide. The figures accompanied the start of Mali’s 2026–27 school year and UNICEF’s call for safe, inclusive learning environments.

In a 2 October release marking the start of Mali’s 2026–27 school year, UNICEF said it and its partners had supported 151,189 children with school kits and learning materials during the previous year. The organisation also reported training 2,562 teachers, building or rehabilitating 589 classrooms and supporting menstrual-hygiene facilities in 79 schools.

The same statement said 2,444 schools remained non-functional across Mali, affecting more than 733,000 children and nearly 14,700 teachers, citing Education Cluster data. UNICEF also cited a 2024 modelled estimate that more than two million children were out of school or at risk of leaving. These figures have different sources and reference periods.

UNICEF said its support would continue in education, nutrition, water, hygiene, sanitation and child protection. The release does not establish that all reported support reached every school or that the national access gaps have since changed.
