India’s Union Cabinet raised the monthly wage ceiling for mandatory membership in the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) from 15,000 to 25,000 rupees. The new limit took effect on 17 September 2026, following nearly 12 years without a revision.

The official release said about 5.1 million additional workers nationwide were expected to become eligible for mandatory coverage. Under the existing EPF system, employees contribute 12% of basic wages and employers make an equivalent contribution. Of the employer share, 8.33% goes to the pension scheme and 3.67% to the employee’s provident-fund account.
