On October 9, ahead of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s COP17, FAO outlined five complementary indicators proposed for possible addition to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework monitoring system. They address genetic diversity under Target 4 and invasive alien species under Target 6, and may also inform Target 10 on aquaculture and forestry.

The proposals draw on country information governments submit to FAO’s AquaGRIS and SilvaGRIS systems and are intended to make use of existing reporting. COP17, scheduled for October, will decide whether the five indicators enter the monitoring framework; FAO’s report describes them as proposals, not adopted indicators.
