Eurostat attributed the decrease to consumption rising 1.3% quarter on quarter while gross disposable income grew 1.1%. The household investment rate also edged down, from 8.4% to 8.3%.

In the same release, the euro area non-financial corporation profit share rose from 38.4% to 39.0%, while the business investment rate increased from 22.5% to 22.7%. Rates are seasonally adjusted; the saving rate is gross saving divided by gross disposable income adjusted for changes in households’ pension fund reserves.

Eurostat revised the first-quarter 2026 household saving rate from 14.3% to 14.4% in this release, so the comparison uses the revised figure.
