Ethiopia manufacturing capacity use reaches 69.2 percent

The State Minister of Industry said utilization rose to 69.2 percent and import substitution saved nearly USD 5.9 billion in foreign exchange in the past fiscal year.

Ethiopia's State Minister of Industry Hassan Muhammed said targeted policy measures had lifted domestic industrial capacity utilization to 69.2 percent. In an interview published by ENA on 3 October, he said efforts to ease electricity, water, capital and raw-material constraints had helped previously closed factories resume operations.

The minister said import substitution saved nearly USD 5.9 billion in foreign exchange during the past fiscal year. The government's 10-Year Perspective Development Plan targets USD 9 billion in industrial export revenue, 5 million jobs in the sector and a 17.2 percent manufacturing share of GDP.
