WHO advised countries to broaden access to safe contraception in new guidance covering methods from emergency contraception to longer-acting implants.

WHO said combined oral contraceptive pills may be used in extended regimens for up to six months or continuously for up to one year, and implants for up to five years. It also recommended mifepristone as an emergency option within five days after unprotected sex.

The organization called for more research on ormeloxifene because safety evidence is limited, and recommended against adding quinestrol-containing pills to national programmes because evidence is limited and serious adverse events have been reported.
