The UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero opened a consultation on 14 October on a proposed legislative framework for smart data in the energy sector. It explores mandatory requirements for relevant data holders to make specified datasets securely available to authorised services when consumers choose to share their data.

The consultation seeks views on datasets, participating organisations, consumer protections, accreditation, governance and funding. The government is considering regulations using powers under the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025. This is a consultation proposal; the requirements are not yet in force. The consultation applies to England, Scotland and Wales.
