Three categories account for 46% of EU household spending

Eurostat’s September assessment examines the distribution of January 2026 consumption expenditure.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages; housing, water and energy; and transport together accounted for 46.0% of EU household consumption expenditure in January 2026, according to the 2 September publication.

The recreation, sport and culture share rose by 1.2 percentage points from January 2025, while transport’s share fell by 0.4 points. These are changes in spending shares, rather than direct changes in prices or consumption volume.
