Multi-racial households made up 11.4% of South Africa’s households in 2022

A Statistics South Africa data story published October 1 says the share of households containing people from more than one population group rose from 1.3% in 2001 to 11.4% in 2022.

Statistics South Africa compared the 2001, 2011 and 2022 censuses in a data story published on October 1. It defines a multi-racial household as one containing people from at least two different population groups. Such households represented 11.4% of South African households in 2022, while 88.6% comprised a single population group.

The Western Cape recorded the highest provincial share, 17%, while Limpopo had the lowest, 6.7%. The story is a compilation and comparison of existing census results, not a new census.
