South Africa’s Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, announced nine new members of the Film and Publications Board (FPB) council on 29 September. Cabinet approved the appointments, and the members will serve five-year terms. Professor Siyasanga Tyali was named chair, with Lungelo Dhladhla Nxele as deputy chair.
The FPB classifies films, games and publications; its functions also include protecting children from harmful material and penalising the creation or distribution of sexually explicit content involving children. The minister called on the new council to strengthen strategic oversight and capacity to address online harms, with a focus on awareness and effective interventions to protect children and vulnerable groups.
