On 29 September 2026 the Government of Ontario announced that Sigfusson Northern Ltd. has been awarded the construction manager contract for the Webequie Supply Road, a 107-kilometre all-season road that will connect Webequie First Nation to the Ring of Fire critical minerals region in northern Ontario. The province broke ground on the road earlier in 2026.

The road is scheduled to open by November 2030. The province says its plan unlocks access to the Ring of Fire five years sooner than originally planned. The road will give the Webequie community its first all-season road access to the rest of Ontario and forms part of a wider Ring of Fire road network. Ontario and Webequie First Nation signed a Community Partnership Agreement in 2025 to accelerate construction.

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said the government is building the highway infrastructure in partnership with Webequie First Nation, and Chief Lorraine Whitehead called the selection of a construction manager a step forward in realizing the community-led vision for the road. The release did not state a contract value.

Methodology

The 107 kilometres is the length of the all-season road that the province is building, a planned length rather than a length already built. The five years is the province’s statement of how much sooner access to the Ring of Fire is being unlocked than originally planned. The release does not state a contract value, and the Ring of Fire-wide jobs and economic projections in it describe the wider mineral development rather than this contract, so they are excluded.
