Sea transport carries most EU external trade by weight

The 2025 figures show different maritime shares by weight and value.

Sea transport carried 73.3% of EU imports and 72.6% of exports by weight in trade with non-EU countries in 2025, Eurostat said. Maritime imports totalled 1.1 billion tonnes and exports 0.5 billion tonnes.

By value, sea transport accounted for 50.2% of imports and 40.4% of exports. Weight and value are different measures; carrying most heavy cargo does not imply the same share of trade value.
