Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) exercised an option in its 2024 contract and ordered 10 additional intercity trains from Stadler. The company said on October 9 that the order will expand the fleet developed for Saudi Arabia from 10 to 20 train sets. The maintenance agreement will also be extended to cover the additional vehicles.

The contract value exceeds 300 million Swiss francs, and the trains will be built primarily in Switzerland. They are intended for SAR’s East-West line linking Riyadh, Hofuf, Abqaiq and Dammam. Commercial passenger service is expected to begin in the second half of 2029.
