Saudi Arabia and FAO report gains in small-ruminant farming pilot

The ministry reported better pilot birth and milk indicators; national-scale figures are projections.

Saudi Arabia’s environment and agriculture ministry and the Food and Agriculture Organization reported that a small-ruminant pilot raised the lambing rate from 0.4 to 0.8, reduced animal mortality from 24% to 8% and doubled milk production. These results refer to the pilot.

The ministry projected that a five-year national-scale programme could generate SAR18 billion in economic value and cut import dependence by nearly half. Those figures are projections for expansion, not realised outcomes.
