Brazil deployed seafloor seismometers at Rio Grande Rise

An expedition placed two instruments on 16–23 August; this is not a rare-earth reserve or mine discovery.

Brazil’s National Observatory and Navy installed two ocean-bottom seismometers at Rio Grande Rise during an expedition from 16 to 23 August 2026. The Observatory’s 29 September release and CPG’s 10 October report place the instruments about 1,500 kilometres off the coast and roughly 500–600 metres deep; deployment was planned for one year.

The instruments collect seismic signals to study crustal structure and geological formation indirectly. Regional discussion of rare-earth potential does not establish a deposit, reserve or extraction project at the site. This report concerns a scientific instrument deployment.

Methodology

The Observatory’s primary release appeared on 29 September; CPG’s 10 October item recaps the August expedition. Two instruments were deployed at roughly 500–600 m depth, about 1,500 km offshore, for a planned year of monitoring. This is not a mineral discovery. Geography: Rio Grande Rise, South Atlantic.
