Kangaba central sub-prefect Lacina Diarra chaired a meeting on 5 October about the illegal installation and use of heavy machinery in artisanal mining, according to AMAP. It brought together mayors, traditional authorities, mining companies, youth and women’s groups from the arrondissement’s four communes.
Diarra said some operators were using equipment prohibited for artisanal mining and that illegal activity on licensed areas and other land was increasing. He also said some local authorities were involved in setting up operations, depriving the state of revenue. Representatives of about ten licensed mining companies said residents disputed their permits and asked authorities to intervene.
The meeting reviewed provisions of Mali’s mining code on artisanal mining, permits and allowed equipment. Participants recommended more village-level awareness sessions, sanctions against illegal operators and measures to protect land and the environment.
