Nigeria’s House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee gave the coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) seven days to appear before it, Voice of Nigeria reported on 6 October. The committee adopted the ultimatum at a public hearing in Abuja attended by 27 members after the coordinator did not appear in response to four earlier invitations.
The committee said it was seeking explanations on issues raised in the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation’s 2021 and 2024 audit reports, including queries about contracts and payments. Committee chairman Bamidele Salam set 12 October as the appearance deadline and said lawmakers could compel the agency’s accounting officer if it was missed. The same invitation was extended to the Ogoni Remediation Trust Fund board chair. The audit queries are allegations under committee review, not findings of guilt.
