Ethiopia's seventh Parliament opens after general election

Ethiopia's new parliamentary term opened on 5 October. More than 54 million people voted in the June election, according to figures ENA attributed to the National Election Board.

Newly elected members of Ethiopia's House of Peoples' Representatives convened on 5 October, opening the first working year of the seventh parliamentary term. The Ethiopian News Agency, citing the National Election Board, reported that more than 54 million voters cast ballots in the 1 June general election, which involved 42 political parties and 10,438 candidates.

ENA reported that the governing Prosperity Party secured a parliamentary majority and the mandate under Article 56 of the Constitution to organize the federal government. Parliament's opening moves the country from the election process into a governing phase, with cabinet formation to proceed through constitutional steps.
