The criminal chamber of the Gao Court of First Instance opened its inaugural session on 5 October, according to the Malian Press and Publicity Agency (AMAP). Regional governor Moussa Moriba Traoré presided at the opening, attended by the national director of justice administration and regional judicial officials.

The docket contained 18 cases: nine criminal matters, including two assassination cases, one murder, two fatal-assault cases, one rape case and three cases involving alleged sexual abuse of children. These are cases scheduled for hearing; the report does not state their outcomes.

Gao’s prosecutor said the session followed judicial reforms adopted in 2023–24 that replaced assize courts with criminal chambers. The national justice administration director said the change is intended to bring criminal proceedings closer to residents and reduce their costs.
