Tokyo petrol prices fell year on year in September as store-sale kerosene rose

Japan's Statistics Bureau reported a September price of 172 yen per litre for regular gasoline in Tokyo's special wards. Store-sale kerosene in an 18-litre quantity was 11 percent more expensive than a year earlier.

Japan's retail-price series recorded a regular-gasoline price of 172 yen per litre in Tokyo's special wards in September 2026. That was 5 yen, or 2.8 percent, below a year earlier. The Statistics Bureau updated the series on 2 October; its definition excludes self-service gasoline stations.

The store-sale kerosene item, measured per 18 litres, was priced at 2,646 yen in the same month, up 263 yen or 11.0 percent year on year. These are retail prices for specified products and do not measure total fuel sales across Tokyo or all fuel types.

Methodology

The Bureau's 2 October update publishes monthly retail-price series for Tokyo's special wards. The gasoline series is for one litre of regular gasoline and its stated series definition excludes self-service stations; the kerosene series is for an 18-litre store-sale product. The source also gives each price's difference and percentage change from a year earlier. Values are nominal yen prices for specified products, not total market sales.
