Mexico’s Social Security Institute (IMSS) said on 11 October that a 48-year-old patient had received a successful heart transplant at La Raza hospital in Mexico City. The institute described it as the hospital unit’s eighth successful heart transplant of the year and said the patient had dilated cardiomyopathy, for which transplantation was considered the only treatment option.
IMSS said the donor heart was coordinated from Culiacán to reach the hospital within the clinical window of less than six hours from removal to implantation. The institute said transport was coordinated while Hurricane Polo was affecting the Pacific coast and that the patient was recovering favorably after surgery. The release does not give the operation date, and the reported clinical outcome is the institute’s account.
