ILO estimates 21,400 workers live within four kilometres of Nepal flood footprint

A preliminary assessment released on 1 October says damaged transport and trade links could spread the August flood’s employment effects beyond the inundated area.

An ILO rapid assessment dated 1 October estimates that about 21,400 employed people live within four kilometres of the mapped footprint of the 26 August 2026 flood along Nepal’s Bhote Koshi–Trishuli corridor from the China border. This is an indicative estimate of workers’ geographic exposure, not a count of people who actually lost jobs or income.

The assessment identifies tourism, agriculture, transport and micro and small enterprises as exposed to pressure. It says the Rasuwa and Tatopani crossings carried around 22% of Nepal’s imports from China in fiscal year 2025–26, while Rasuwa—which suffered severe transport damage—handled nearly half of exports to China. The scale of wider effects depends on how long routes remain disrupted and the availability and cost of alternatives; the assessment does not claim realized job losses.
