Japan's unemployment rate rose to 2.5% in August

Japan's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 2.5% in August 2026. Employment rose by 140,000 year over year while the number of unemployed people fell by 20,000.

Japan's Statistics Bureau reported 68.49 million employed people in August, 140,000 more than a year earlier. The number of unemployed people was 1.80 million, down 20,000 on the annual comparison.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage point from July to 2.5%. The figures are from the national Labour Force Survey's basic tabulation; the unemployment rate is seasonally adjusted.
