South African Trade Minister Parks Tau said on 20 October that first-phase infrastructure works covering about 75 hectares had begun at the Fetakgomo-Tubatse Special Economic Zone. Fencing was 95% complete and guardhouses approximately 65% complete.

The zone is being developed for mineral processing, manufacturing and renewable energy. Electricity infrastructure is undergoing design, while water and treatment works remain at concept and viability stage.
