New Zealand announced on 21 October that a NZ$3 million Regional Infrastructure Fund grant would support restoration of Lake Ōmāpere, Northland’s largest lake. The government says the project aims to improve the region’s water resilience.

Funding will cover approvals, road access, a water-level control weir and design for future water storage infrastructure. The first stage, led on behalf of the Lake Ōmāpere Trust, is expected to cost around NZ$5.9 million; this is an estimate rather than the cost of completed work.
