On 10 September, the European Commission presented a new strategy for the EU’s outermost regions. Around 5 million people live across French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, Réunion, Saint-Martin, the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands.
The plan focuses on four areas: geostrategic role and regional integration; competitiveness and single-market access; resilience and preparedness; and social fairness and support for residents. The Commission also proposed targeted legal adaptations in areas including agriculture, forestry, fisheries, migration and taxation, and aims to establish a yearly structured dialogue and a dedicated portal.
