European Commissioner for the Environment Jessika Roswall discussed a review of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive with stakeholders on 30 September. The directive is the EU’s main framework for protecting the marine environment and aims to achieve good environmental status in all EU marine waters.

The Commission’s 2025 evaluation found that the objective had not been achieved by 2020. Options discussed include strengthening the framework, linking it more closely with water and nature-restoration laws, improving monitoring and data management, and reducing member states’ reporting obligations.
