The European Commission’s European Red List of Moths, published on 21 September, says nearly 11% of moth species in Europe and nearly 12% in the EU27 are threatened with extinction. The assessment covers 3,082 species at the European level.

The report says data are lacking for one quarter of species; about 35% of endemic species assessed at European level are also classified as data deficient. It identifies habitat change and degradation, climate change and intensive agriculture among the main pressures. The Commission points to protecting, restoring and reconnecting habitats and improving monitoring as priorities.
