The U.S. Department of Energy on October 13 announced its intention to support the Tennessee Valley Authority in funding 84 transmission and distribution projects across eight states. DOE described a total award of about $581 million, comprising $250 million in federal funding and about $331 million in applicant cost-share funding.
The projects are expected to add about 2.5 gigawatts of grid capacity and support about 800 jobs. DOE said that, combined with TVA’s separate SPARK transmission-line upgrade, planned investment would total nearly $741 million and expected capacity additions would exceed 4,300 megawatts. Final federal funding, scope and schedules remain subject to executed agreements and environmental, permitting, regulatory and Tribal reviews; the announcement does not report completed construction.
