The U.S. Department of Energy announced on October 1 an intent to fund nonprofit organizations that provide cybersecurity support to electric cooperatives, municipal utilities and small investor-owned utilities. The $100 million opportunity, administered through DOE’s Rural and Municipal Utility Cybersecurity partnership, could fund technical assistance, tools, training and threat-information sharing.

Applicants must demonstrate formal partnerships with at least six eligible utilities and the ability to deliver cybersecurity improvements across those participants. The program is intended to address capacity gaps at resource-constrained operators; DOE’s announcement describes a funding opportunity, and does not say the money has already been awarded.
