Brazil’s Federal Police and Federal Revenue Service said they seized 17,000 litres of ethyl acetate in Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul, on October 11. The agencies said the shipment was intended for unauthorized export to Bolivia and that their operation drew on intelligence gathered by both institutions.
Ethyl acetate is used in several industrial processes and can also be used in cocaine processing, the Police said. Its sale is subject to federal control because of that possible illicit use. The release did not say the seized material had been used to make drugs, and it reported no charges or convictions. The Police said its chemical-profiling work on analyzed cocaine samples informs intelligence and oversight of controlled chemicals, including in border areas; the announcement did not provide a sample total or time period.
