Australia records its second-warmest September

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology ranked September 2026 as the second-warmest in national records that began in 1910.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s monthly summary, released on 1 October, put Australia’s area-averaged temperature in September 2026 at 2.90°C above the 1961–1990 average. It was the second-highest September value since national observations began in 1910.

The area-averaged mean minimum temperature was also a September record, while national rainfall was 17% below the reference-period average. These national averages do not by themselves describe differences between states and territories.
