WIPO: Global patent filings reached 3.7 million in 2024

WIPO’s 2025 indicators report counted 3.7 million patent applications worldwide in 2024, a 4.9% annual increase.

Resident applicants accounted for 2.7 million filings and non-resident applicants for about 1 million. Applicants in China, India, the Republic of Korea and Japan were the main sources of the increase.

These are patent applications, not grants or commercialized inventions. WIPO’s global comparison classifies activity by the first named applicant’s residence.
