At the second UN General Assembly high-level meeting, countries renewed their call for collective action and equitable investment in preventing, preparing for and responding to future pandemics.

The 25 September meeting reviewed progress since the first session in 2023. Leaders cited adoption of the WHO Pandemic Agreement and amendments to the International Health Regulations, while stressing that sustained action and financing remain necessary.

Leaders said preparedness requires whole-of-government and whole-of-society participation, stronger health systems, early warning and fair access to vaccines, medicines and diagnostics. Negotiations on the Pandemic Agreement’s pathogen-sharing annex were still ongoing.
