Western Australia’s government said on October 11 that it will prepare a business case on a possible merger of the University of Western Australia, Curtin University and Murdoch University. The state Department of the Premier and Cabinet will lead the work, with university and student representatives and industry, research and finance expertise on a steering committee.
The government said the review will examine the potential merger’s costs, benefits, funding and transition arrangements. The completed business case will go to government before a final decision is made, so the announcement does not approve a merger. The statement also identifies possible accompanying reforms focused on student outcomes, work placements and support for research commercialisation.
