EIA estimates US small-scale solar output at 92,979 GWh in 2025
EIA estimated rooftop solar output at 18,812 GWh in 2016 and 92,979 GWh in 2025.

The Energy Information Administration estimates that U.S. electricity generation from small-scale or rooftop photovoltaic systems, each below one megawatt of capacity, rose from 18,812 gigawatt-hours in 2016 to 92,979 GWh in 2025. California, Arizona, Texas and Florida had the largest state totals.
California supplied 37% of U.S. small-scale solar generation in 2025. EIA says output continues to grow, although the annual growth rate has slowed since 2022. These generation figures are estimates because utilities may not directly observe rooftop systems’ output on distribution networks.
Data
Estimated U.S. small-scale solar generation
EIA annual generation estimates for small-scale and rooftop solar systems below 1 MW.
| 2016 annual estimate | 18,812 GWh |
| 2025 annual estimate | 92,979 GWh |
Methodology
EIA annual generation estimates are retained in the source energy unit, GWh. The agency estimates rooftop generation with modelling tools; these are not presented as directly metered national totals.
