U.S. gas stocks rise by 77 Bcf as regional storage positions diverge

EIA estimates working gas at 3,644 Bcf for October 16, above the five-year average but 4% below a year earlier. Regional inventories show a mixed balance.

The United States entered the second half of October with working natural-gas inventories above their recent seasonal norm but below the previous year. The Energy Information Administration’s October 22 release estimated Lower 48 underground working gas at 3,644 billion cubic feet for the week ending October 16. A weekly increase of 77 billion cubic feet lifted the national total, while the regional tables showed that the surplus over the five-year average was unevenly distributed.

The comparison with last year points in a different direction from the comparison with the historical average. Inventories were 152 billion cubic feet below the corresponding 2025 level and 35 billion cubic feet above the 2021–2025 average. EIA expressed those differences as a 4.0% annual shortfall and a 1.0% surplus over the five-year benchmark. Both statements can be true because the two reference levels differ; neither comparison alone establishes how comfortable supplies will be through winter.

The Midwest held 1,065 billion cubic feet and the East held 900 billion cubic feet. Their inventories exceeded both the previous year and the five-year average. South Central stocks stood at 1,125 billion cubic feet, below both benchmarks. Mountain and Pacific inventories were above their respective five-year averages but below the corresponding year-earlier levels. The regional pattern therefore qualifies the national headline: an aggregate surplus does not mean every storage region has a surplus against every reference point.

The report separates a stock from a flow. Working gas is an inventory measured at the reporting date; the weekly net change describes the difference between successive inventory observations. Adding the two figures as if they were independent supplies would double-count the weekly movement. EIA also separates working gas from other gas held in a storage facility, so the reported stock should be read using the agency’s storage definition rather than as a measure of all gas physically underground.

The national total is an estimate from EIA’s weekly storage reporting system. The release includes sampling-variability measures and warns that components may not add precisely to the total because they are rounded independently. That matters when comparing regional net changes with the national change: a small arithmetic discrepancy in the displayed numbers is not evidence of an unreported movement. The regional observations retain the units and reference periods used by the source.

For readers tracking the balance, the most useful next comparison is the following weekly observation on the same basis. A larger or smaller injection can change the stock position, but the storage table alone does not measure production, consumption, pipeline constraints or the price paid by an individual buyer. Newsverum’s accompanying numerical block records the source’s two national percentage comparisons as estimates. It does not convert these inventories into an energy price, a forecast or a new physical-volume unit.
