The UN Environment Programme’s Limiting Overshoot report, released on 2 September, says global warming is likely to cross the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C level within the next few years. It argues that the magnitude and duration of the overshoot should be kept as small as possible.

The agency’s release says the report’s best-case scenario limits peak warming to 1.8°C, while other scenarios exceed 2°C. These are modelled pathways, not measured future outcomes.
