The UK government said it would work with technology companies to offer 10,000 work-experience placements for young people over three years. Microsoft, Cisco, IBM, Cognizant, AtkinsRéalis, Arm, Kainos and QinetiQ were named as partners. The TechFirst skills programme is also being made available to all secondary schools, with a government ambition to reach one million students by 2028.

The target includes 400,000 students from the most disadvantaged schools. Activities include workshops, career talks, technology clubs and workplace experiences. A separate policy plan aims for 20,000 entry-level roles to be created or filled each year, including existing vacancies; that is a target, not a count of jobs already filled. The placements are intended to help young people prepare for future roles in the sector.
