The Ministry of Justice for England and Wales announced on Oct. 12 a pilot to expand remote-hearing technology. The system digitally transfers cases to judges elsewhere in the country and lets participants attend without being in the same courtroom.
The initiative began in London and the North-East and connects judges, defendants, lawyers, court staff and witnesses. The ministry says tens of thousands of remote and hybrid hearings already take place each month in England and Wales; safeguards include the right to request an in-person hearing. Future expansion remains subject to evaluation and judicial approval.
