The UK Treasury published guidance on 28 October for a Pension Tax Allowance starting in April 2027. It applies to people above State Pension age or reaching that age during the tax year, and is based on total income rather than whether it comes from a state pension, private pension or work.

For 2027–28, the full reduction covers eligible income up to the annual value of the full new State Pension, stated as 13,036.40 pounds. The reduction then tapers by one pound for each three pounds of additional income until withdrawn. The separate personal income-tax allowance of 12,570 pounds is unchanged.

HMRC intends to apply the reduction automatically using age and income information, without a separate claim. The guidance covers tax years 2027–28 through 2029–30, with later arrangements subject to review. The measure reduces qualifying income-tax liability; it does not permanently exempt all state pensions from tax or increase the pension payment itself.
