UC San Diego develops fluorine-free binder to simplify battery recycling
UC San Diego announced on October 9 a fluorine-free, water-soluble binder for lithium-ion batteries. Researchers linked polyacrylic acid and carboxymethyl cellulose with citric acid to form a polymer network that holds electrode layers together.
Event / data period:

In experiments, soaking electrodes in water dissolved the binder and separated their coatings from metal foils. Recovered materials were regenerated and reused in batteries. The university reported comparable performance; scaling for commercial manufacturing and optimization for different battery chemistries remain ongoing.
