Calculations predict phonon frequency combs in two twisted atomic bilayers

Researchers at the Dubai campus of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science used density-functional theory to study two twisted transition-metal dichalcogenide heterostructures. Their model predicts that both structures can form frequency combs between selected vibrational modes.

The calculations considered MoS₂/WSe₂ and MoS₂/MoSe₂ bilayers at a shared twist angle of 21.787°. Second- and third-order force constants were used to calculate mode frequencies, quality factors and nonlinear coupling; selected mode pairs in each structure lay within 0.8% of a 2:1 resonance.

Solving two-mode dynamical equations indicated that phononic frequency combs can emerge through a threshold transition under the modelled conditions. The study offers a first-principles way to assess which structures may be suitable; it does not report a measured comb in a fabricated device or a functioning device demonstration.

Methodology

The authors modelled MoS₂/WSe₂ and MoS₂/MoSe₂ at a shared 21.787° twist angle in a 42-atom moiré cell and derived vibrational modes from DFT force constants.

Computational screen identifies six chiral carbon-boron semimetal candidates

First-principles calculations screened 972 possible C-B structures in selected chiral space groups and identified six stable candidates. For one structure, the study estimates a 31.1 K superconducting transition using the McMillan formula; it does not report synthesis of the materials.

WS₂ layers show nonlinear phase changes in electron ptychography

Researchers compared monolayer, bilayer and trilayer regions of WS₂ in one specimen using electron ptychography. The measured phase of tungsten columns rose about 13.2% from one to two layers, but only 4.7% from two to three.

Electrically switchable p-wave magnetism reported in BiFeO₃ at room temperature

Researchers report that BiFeO₃’s cycloidal spin structure produces p-wave spin polarization at room temperature and that the circular photogalvanic current can be reversed by electric-field pulses. The work combines theory, magnetic imaging and optical-current measurements.
